An abortion is the removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death. This can occur spontaneously as a miscarriage, or other means. Commonly, "abortion" refers to a provoked procedure at any point during pregnancy; medically, it is defined as miscarriage or induced termination before twenty weeks' growth. Throughout history abortion has been induced by various methods. The moral and legal aspects of abortion are subject to intense debate in many places.
About 90% of abortions are done in the first trimester (three months) of pregnancy. 9% are done in the second trimester. If an abortion has been decided upon, it is best to do it early in pregnancy, because the likelihood of complications is very much reduced.
